Make it yours
Make emoji for your group, style your profile, and set how snug looks on this device.
Your group makes its own emoji, and you choose how everyone sees you. How snug looks is set on each device.
Add custom emoji
Anyone on a snug server can add emoji for everyone there, with no limit on how many.
- Open Settings > Emoji.
- Select choose images (in the phone app, choose a photo).
- Check each name, then choose make emoji.
An emoji starts as a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF of up to 8 MB. The whole picture
fits into a 128-pixel square. An animated GIF keeps moving; an animated WebP
becomes a still. A name is 2 to 32 lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens, or
underscores, and each name exists once per server. Type :name: in a message,
or pick it from the emoji picker.
To make one from a picture someone already shared, open it from files and choose make emoji.
group emoji, on the same page, lists every emoji with who added it. Search
by name or by creator. The person who added an emoji, or an admin, can remove
it there. Messages and reactions that used it then show its :name: as text.
Choose how you appear
Settings > Profile sets how everyone on this snug server sees you. Your name at the bottom left opens your card, and edit profile there goes to the same page.
Your name can be up to 32 characters. Nobody else on the server can hold the same one, so an @mention always means one person.
Select your picture to change it, or banner for the wide picture across the top of your card. Each takes a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF of up to 8 MB, and a GIF keeps its motion. The picture is cropped to a square, the banner to 5 by 2. use initials takes the picture off, and remove banner takes the banner off.
Below them, pick your look:
- your color, for your initials and your name, and a second color for two-color looks
- a banner scene in your colors, such as dusk, koi pond, or synthwave
- a card effect behind your card, such as stars, fireflies, or snow
- a frame around your picture
- an accessory beside it, such as headphones, a cat, or a mug of tea
- a name style (color, gradient, or glow) and a name font (plain, serif, or mono)
Messages, lists, and replies show your name in your color, style, and font. Friends see your look changes when you leave Profile. reset to default puts the look back the way snug starts it, and keeps your name, pictures, status, and pronouns.
A status is one emoji, up to 80 characters of text, or both. It clears after the time you pick, from 30 minutes to a week, or never with don't clear. pronouns, up to 40 characters, show on your card. Your name, pictures, status, and pronouns change for everyone as soon as you save them.
Your profile belongs to this one snug server. On another server you set it again. If Profile asks for a server upgrade, that server is too old for banners, moving pictures, colors, frames, a status, or pronouns. Ask whoever runs it to update.
If a friend keeps changing their name
Open their profile and choose set nickname, or right-click them (touch and
hold on a phone). Your nickname for them shows after their name, only on this
device, like xXx_dark_lord (Rob). It stays through every rename. Their own
name stays in front, so you still see what everyone else sees.
The nickname never reaches the server or your other devices. To drop it, open their profile and choose remove nickname.
Change how snug looks
Settings > Appearance changes only the device you're on, and each choice applies at once.
Pick a theme: night talk (snug's own), midnight (true black), ash, daylight, Catppuccin Mocha, Catppuccin Latte, or Everforest. your colors follows your profile's colors. your own builds a theme from any background you pick: a dark color gives a dark theme, a light one a light theme.
accent colors buttons, switches, and what needs your eye, and second color colors quieter highlights. from your profile sets them from your color, your second color, or both. Any color you pick shifts as far as it must to keep words readable.
Choose comfortable for roomier rows or compact for tighter ones, then a text size from smaller to larger. A preview shows the result.
Under pictures and links:
- play animations starts on. Turn it off to keep moving profile pictures, banners, frames, and card effects still. With your device's reduced motion on, they stay still anyway.
- show profile styles starts on. Turn it off to see everyone in only their color and banner, without frames, accessories, name styles, or card effects.
- show pictures from other sites starts on. Turn it off and GIFs, photos, and link artwork wait for your click, so those sites hear nothing from you until then.
- show stills on video cards starts off. Turned on, YouTube and Vimeo links show the frame those sites provide, which tells them someone is reading.
Who can see what covers what else reaches other sites.
reset to default puts the theme, colors, density, text size, and animations back. The other switches stay as you set them.
Arrange the window
In the browser and the desktop app, drag the edge of the sidebar or the video panel to resize it, and double-click the edge to reset it. With a keyboard, focus the edge and use the arrow keys; Home resets it. Each size stays on this device. The phone app has the same kind of handle for the video stage and between your channels and direct messages.
The desktop app's window shrinks to 360 by 520 pixels and reopens where you left it. At 640 pixels wide or less, the window switches to the one-column layout of a phone.
