Join a server

If it asks for a password

That's one password shared by the whole group. Ask whoever invited you. You'll type it once, when you first take a name here; snug remembers your device after that, so you won't sign in with it again.

If it asks for an admin setup code

This server doesn't have an admin yet. The server operator uses the admin setup code printed during installation to make the first account. The code stops working after that account exists and is not the group's shared server password.

Choose I have an account and follow link another device; your name, messages, and roles come with you.

Find your way around

Channels sit in the sidebar; select one to read it. direct holds your one-to-one conversations. The faces near the bottom show who's online. Open them to find anyone, even someone who's away.

Use the × beside a conversation to remove it from direct on this device. Your messages and draft stay saved. Open the person from everyone, or find them with Find to return to the same conversation. Its default shortcut is Ctrl-K (Command-K on a Mac). A new incoming message puts it back in the list.

To talk, select the voice button beside a channel. On a phone or in a narrow window, open the channel menu and select Join call. Allow the microphone when your browser asks. In that layout, active call controls and Leave call sit above the message field. To write, type in the box at the bottom and press Enter. Your settings live behind the gear beside your name, at the bottom left.

If a friend keeps changing their name

Select their name anywhere it appears to open their profile, then choose set nickname and type the name you know them by. Right-clicking them (touch and hold on a phone) offers set nickname too. From then on this device shows it beside their name, like xXx_dark_lord (Rob), wherever they turn up: messages, the people list, mentions, and direct messages. Their name stays in front, so you always see what everyone else sees, and the nickname stays with them through every rename.

Only you see this nickname; it never reaches the server or your other devices. Open the profile again and choose remove nickname to let it go.
