For everyone

Coming from Discord

What carries over, what works differently, and how to bring everyone across.

A snug server is one group's place, with its own address, its own accounts, and its own admins. Most of what your group does on a Discord server has a counterpart here.

How things map

  • Your Discord server becomes a snug server, at an address of its own.
  • Text and voice channels both become snug channels. Every channel has a chat and a call; select the arrow beside a channel's name to join its call. Everyone can enter #home.
  • Roles stay roles, under Settings > Admin > Roles. A private channel lets in only the roles named under its who can enter. The phone app keeps roles and channel access under People in Settings. Admins can do everything, and only people can be admins.
  • DMs become direct messages between two people. For a few friends at once, make a private channel.
  • Go Live becomes screen sharing. Friends in the call choose which shares they watch.
  • Events become plans, which can land on everyone's own calendar. Polls stay polls.
  • The member list is the faces at the bottom of the sidebar: who's online, and who's away.
  • Music bots become snug's media bot, which plays into a channel's call with nobody hosting it. Play music and video sets one up.
  • Webhooks stay webhooks, under Settings > Admin > Webhooks. A snug webhook takes JSON with a text field, so a service set up for Discord's format needs that change.

Other Discord bots don't come over, and there's no public way to connect your own bots yet.

What everyone gets

There's no paid tier for members. Everyone on the server gets every feature, from screen sharing up to 4K at 60 fps to custom emoji with no slot limit. What everyone on the server gets lists them all. There are no ads, Boosts, or Quests.

What works differently

Your friends don't make a snug account. They choose a name on your server, and that name is their account there, with no email or phone number. On a new device they sign in with a one-time code from a device that's already signed in.

A hosted snug server has 50 seats, one for each person's account, online or not. Bots don't take one, and a self-hosted server has no seat limit. How seats count covers bans and freeing a seat.

Notifications are quieter. A number beside a channel counts only what's addressed to you: a mention, a reply, or a direct message. Everything else shows a dot. A direct message rings only when its sender turns on the bell beside the message field. Notifications and updates covers the choices.

Reports go to your server's own admins, never to snug. snug hosting can reach what a hosted server stores; who can see what spells out who holds what.

What doesn't come over

Message history stays on Discord. It can't be imported, so your server starts with the next thing anyone says. Channels, roles, and custom emoji are set up again by hand.

Bring everyone over

  1. Set up your own snug server. Hosted servers are coming soon.
  2. Make your channels and roles.
  3. Make an invite link and post it where your group already talks.

Friends open the link, choose a name, and they're in. Each link works for seven days, and several can work at once. Any member can make one unless your server lets only admins. For friends who drift in later, make a new link or set a shared password; see let people in. A friend with only the link joins from a browser, and the apps are there when they want more.
